Product details

Junghans Max Bill Automatic - 27/4700.02

Clean, confident and instantly recognizable, the Junghans max bill Automatic (ref. 27/4700.02) is Bauhaus-inspired design in its most wearable form. The matt silver-plated dial pairs Max Bill's squared numerals with a minute track and hands coated in luminous substance, and a discreet date display adds everyday convenience without disturbing the calm, logical layout.

Powering it is the self-winding J800.1 movement, which keeps itself wound as you wear it and stores up to 38 hours of reserve. The polished 38mm stainless steel case measures only 10mm in height, and its domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal lends a softly vintage silhouette. A black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle and 5 bar water resistance complete a German automatic watch that feels just as at home with a suit as with a sweater.

Timepiece History

Junghans was founded on April 14, 1861, in Schramberg in Germany's Black Forest, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, set up a firm making parts for large Black Forest clocks; the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the world, and in 1918 it completed its nine-level terrace building, the Terrassenbau, which today houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans remains based in Schramberg today.

The max bill partnership dates back to 1956, when Junghans began working with the Bauhaus-trained artist and architect Max Bill; their first joint creations were table clocks in 1958. In 1961 Bill designed Junghans' first line of mechanical wristwatches, and that design is still produced in nearly the same form today, from its logical dial layout to the squared numerals Bill created for it.
