Junghans Meister Chronoscope - 27/4223.03

Warm, refined and quietly sporty, the Junghans Meister Chronoscope (ref. 27/4223.03) is a German automatic chronograph that wears its heritage with pride. A warm grey dial finished with a sunray brush catches the light at every turn, and its diamond-effect hour and minute hands, filled with luminous substance, stay legible after dark. The 30-minute and 12-hour counters sit in softly sunken, bowl-shaped recesses, a signature detail of the Meister family, while the date and an English weekday display make it a genuinely practical everyday watch.

Beneath the domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the self-winding Junghans J880.1 caliber stores up to 48 hours of power reserve when the chronograph is not running, and the case back, secured by five screws and fitted with mineral crystal, lets you watch it at work. The polished 40.7mm stainless steel case stands 13.9mm tall, and a grey ostrich leather strap with a stainless steel buckle carries the tonal theme from dial to wrist. Water resistant to 5 bar, this is a chronograph made for long days at the desk and relaxed weekends alike.

Timepiece History

Junghans was founded on April 14, 1861, in Schramberg in Germany's Black Forest, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, set up a firm making parts for large Black Forest clocks; the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the world, and in 1918 it completed its nine-level terrace building, the Terrassenbau, which today houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans remains based in Schramberg today.

Junghans began producing its own movements in the 1930s, and those calibers became the basis of the Meister watches, a collection launched in 1936. During the heyday of the mechanical wristwatch, Junghans developed many movements in Schramberg and reserved its finest calibers for the Meister line; in 1956 it ranked among the largest chronometer makers in the world, and in 1957 it introduced the J83, its first automatic chronometer caliber. Nearly a century on, the Meister Chronoscope continues that tradition of reliable timekeeping, with the bowl-shaped subdials that are typical of the Meister range.
