Junghans Meister Chronoscope - 27/4224.03

Cool, composed and beautifully balanced, the Junghans Meister Chronoscope (ref. 27/4224.03) is a German automatic chronograph with a refined, tonal look. A sapphire grey dial with a sunray brush frames contrasting anthracite subdials, and the interplay of the two greys gives the face real depth. Luminous hands, a date and an English weekday display keep it every bit as useful as it is good-looking.

Power comes from the self-winding J880.1 caliber, which drives the stop function with 30-minute and 12-hour counters and offers up to 48 hours of reserve when the chronograph is not running. Its rhodium-plated finish, striped rotor with engraved logo and blued screws can be admired through the five-screw case back with mineral crystal. The polished stainless steel case measures 40.7mm by 13.9mm, its domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal blends into the gently curved profile, and an ostrich leather strap with a stainless steel buckle plus 5 bar water resistance round out a watch that moves easily from tailored to casual.

Timepiece History

Junghans was founded on April 14, 1861, in Schramberg in Germany's Black Forest, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law, Jakob Zeller-Tobler, set up a firm making parts for large Black Forest clocks; the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the world, and in 1918 it completed its nine-level terrace building, the Terrassenbau, which today houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans remains based in Schramberg today.

The Meister story began in the 1930s, when Junghans started producing its own movements, and the Meister collection followed in 1936 with those calibers at its heart. During the heyday of the mechanical wristwatch, Junghans developed many movements in Schramberg and saved its finest for Meister. In 1956 it ranked among the largest chronometer makers in the world, and in 1957 it introduced the J83, its first automatic chronometer caliber. The Meister Chronoscope carries on nearly a century of reliable Meister timekeeping, its bowl-shaped subdials a signature of the range.
