Junghans Max Bill Automatic - 27/3500.02

A true icon of German design, the Junghans max bill Automatic (ref. 27/3500.02) distills timekeeping to its purest form. Its matt silver-plated dial carries the slender numerals and logical layout Max Bill created for Junghans, with a minute track and hands treated with luminous substance so the time stays readable after dark. With no date window to interrupt the composition, the dial stays perfectly balanced, exactly as its designer intended.

Inside the polished 38mm stainless steel case, the self-winding J800.1 movement winds itself with the motion of your wrist and holds up to 38 hours of power reserve. A domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal gives the watch its gentle vintage profile while protecting the dial, and at just 10mm high it slips easily under a cuff. Finished on a black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle and water resistant to 5 bar, this German automatic watch is understated luxury you can wear every day.

Timepiece History

Junghans traces its roots to 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law set up a workshop in Schramberg, in Germany's Black Forest, to make components for clocks, and the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had become the world's largest watch factory, and in 1918 Arthur Junghans completed the nine-tier Terrassenbau, a terraced factory designed to bring daylight to every workplace that now houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans still crafts its watches in Schramberg.

In the early 1950s, Junghans commissioned the Swiss designer and former Bauhaus student Max Bill to create a kitchen clock, and from 1961 Bill also designed Junghans' purist wristwatches. He drew the squared numerals and dial typography himself, and the max bill design has remained virtually unchanged since 1961, a lasting example of Bauhaus thinking applied to the wrist.
