Product details

Junghans Max Bill Automatic Bauhaus - 27/4009.02

Minimalism with a spark of color defines the Junghans max bill Automatic Bauhaus (ref. 27/4009.02). Its matt white dial is marked with luminous dots instead of numerals, while red inlays on the hour and minute hands and a red date display echo the iconic red doors of the Bauhaus building in Dessau. It is a design that rewards a closer look and an unmistakable tribute to the school that shaped Max Bill.

Turn the watch over and the self-winding J800.1 movement comes into view through the windows of a Bauhaus motif on the case back, which is secured by four screws. The matt stainless steel case measures 38mm across and 10mm high, topped with a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. With up to 38 hours of power reserve, 5 bar water resistance and a black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle, this automatic Bauhaus watch is as practical as it is meaningful.

Timepiece History

Junghans traces its roots to 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law set up a workshop in Schramberg, in Germany's Black Forest, to make components for clocks, and the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had become the world's largest watch factory, and in 1918 Arthur Junghans completed the nine-tier Terrassenbau, a terraced factory designed to bring daylight to every workplace that now houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans still crafts its watches in Schramberg.

Max Bill studied at the Bauhaus, and after creating a kitchen clock for Junghans in the early 1950s, he designed the company's purist wristwatches from 1961. The Bauhaus editions of the max bill pay direct tribute to that school: their red accents are inspired by the red doors of the Bauhaus building in Dessau, and the case back frames the movement within an image of the building itself.
