Junghans Max Bill Automatic - 27/4700.02

Clean, confident and instantly recognizable, the Junghans max bill Automatic (ref. 27/4700.02) is Bauhaus-inspired design in its most wearable form. The matt silver-plated dial pairs Max Bill's slender numerals with a minute track and hands coated in luminous substance, and a discreet date display adds everyday convenience without disturbing the calm, logical layout.

Powering it is the self-winding J800.1 movement, which keeps itself wound as you wear it and stores up to 38 hours of reserve. The polished 38mm stainless steel case measures only 10mm in height, and its domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal lends a softly vintage silhouette. A black leather strap with a stainless steel buckle and 5 bar water resistance complete a German automatic watch that feels just as at home with a suit as with a sweater.

Timepiece History

Junghans traces its roots to 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law set up a workshop in Schramberg, in Germany's Black Forest, to make components for clocks, and the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had become the world's largest watch factory, and in 1918 Arthur Junghans completed the nine-tier Terrassenbau, a terraced factory designed to bring daylight to every workplace that now houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans still crafts its watches in Schramberg.

Max Bill's work with Junghans began in the early 1950s with a commission for a kitchen clock, and from 1961 the Swiss designer also created the company's wristwatches. The original max bill watch of 1961 measured 34mm, and its clear layout, with numerals and typography Bill drew himself, has stayed virtually unchanged ever since, which is why this 38mm automatic looks as fresh today as it did more than six decades ago.
