Product details

Junghans Max Bill Automatic Bauhaus - 27/4308.02

Dark, refined and full of character, the Junghans max bill Automatic Bauhaus (ref. 27/4308.02) gives the Bauhaus tribute a striking all-black look. The matt black dial uses luminous dots as hour markers, along with black hands with red inlays and a red-tipped seconds hand, so the signature Bauhaus red stands out vividly against the darkness, with a date display tucked neatly into the layout.

The 38mm stainless steel case is finished in a matt black PVD coating and measures just 10mm in height, with a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal on top. Through the partially transparent Bauhaus motif on the four-screw case back, you can watch the self-winding J800.1 movement at work, with up to 38 hours of power reserve. A black leather strap with a matching matt black PVD buckle and 5 bar water resistance round out a modern automatic watch with deep design roots.

Timepiece History

Junghans traces its roots to 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law set up a workshop in Schramberg, in Germany's Black Forest, to make components for clocks, and the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had become the world's largest watch factory, and in 1918 Arthur Junghans completed the nine-tier Terrassenbau, a terraced factory designed to bring daylight to every workplace that now houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans still crafts its watches in Schramberg.

The Bauhaus, founded more than a century ago, shaped architecture, art and design, and Max Bill was one of its students. Junghans began working with Bill in the early 1950s on a kitchen clock, and from 1961 he designed its wristwatches. The max bill Automatic Bauhaus honors that lineage with red highlights drawn from the doors of the Bauhaus building in Dessau and a partially transparent Bauhaus motif on the case back, here rendered in a darker, more contemporary black PVD finish.
