Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph - SSC961

Crisp, classic and wonderfully easy to read, the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph (ref. SSC961) sets black subdials against a white dial with a sandblasted finish, all ringed by a black tachymeter bezel. That finish is chosen for legibility, the quality every Prospex sports watch relies on. The case stays true to the shape of the original, brought up to date with a 39mm diameter and a bracelet that combines hairline and smooth polished surfaces.

Timing duties fall to a 60-minute chronograph that reads to 1/5 of a second, supported by a 24-hour hand, small seconds and a date display. Light keeps Seiko's solar caliber V192 running for approximately six months on a full charge, and a power reserve indicator shows where the charge stands. A curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective inner coating, a screw case back and 10 bar water resistance make it a dependable everyday companion, fastened by a three-fold push-button clasp.

Timepiece History

Seiko's story began in 1881, when a 21-year-old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. The first watch to carry the Seiko name followed in 1924, and Seiko went on to introduce a long line of watchmaking firsts, including the Quartz Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch, on December 25, 1969. In 2024, Seiko celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Seiko brand.

The SSC961 is part of the Prospex Speedtimer series, inspired by Seiko's long tradition in sports timing. In the 1960s, Seiko built high-precision stopwatches around its innovative heart-shaped cam mechanism, including a 1/100-second stopwatch that served as an official timing device at the world sporting event held in Tokyo in 1964, and in 1969 Seiko introduced the Speedtimer with Caliber 6139, the first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch.
