Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Limited Edition "Edo Purple" - HBJ005

Created to celebrate Seiko's 145th anniversary, the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer (ref. HBJ005) is a proud limited edition of 8,000 pieces with a dial inspired by Edo purple. The shade reflects the refined taste of Edo-period Tokyo and the traditions handed down from ancient Edo to the modern city, a heritage meant for future generations. Its solar chronograph design follows the Speedtimer models of the 1960s and 70s, and the bi-color aluminum tachymeter bezel recalls a highly valued Speedtimer from Seiko's vintage archives.

Seiko's solar caliber V192 runs for approximately six months on a full charge, with overcharge prevention, a power reserve indicator and a rated precision of ±15 seconds per month. The chronograph times events of up to 60 minutes to the nearest 1/5 second, joined by a 24-hour hand, small seconds and a date display, while LumiBrite on the hands and indexes keeps it readable in low light. A curved sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on its inner surface covers the dial of the 41.4mm stainless steel case, and the screw case back carries LIMITED EDITION. Rated to 10 bar (100 meters) and fitted with a stainless steel bracelet that closes with a three-fold push-button clasp, it is a collector's piece made to be worn.

Timepiece History

Seiko's story began in 1881, when a 21-year-old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. The first watch to carry the Seiko name followed in 1924, and Seiko went on to introduce a long line of watchmaking firsts, including the Quartz Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch, on December 25, 1969. In 2024, Seiko celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Seiko brand.

The HBJ005 is part of the Prospex Speedtimer series, inspired by Seiko's long tradition in sports timing. In the 1960s, Seiko built high-precision stopwatches around its innovative heart-shaped cam mechanism, including a 1/100-second stopwatch that served as an official timing device at the world sporting event held in Tokyo in 1964, and in 1969 Seiko introduced the Speedtimer with Caliber 6139, the first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. It belongs to the third series of commemorative limited editions marking Seiko's 145th anniversary, in which Edo purple serves as the central design element.
