Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph - SSC965

Fresh, sporty and proudly retro, the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer Solar Chronograph (ref. SSC965) dresses its dial in a soft light green borrowed from the palette of vintage sports cars, set off by black subdials and a silver tachymeter bezel. The design takes its inspiration from Seiko's 1969 Speedtimer, and a sandblast finish on the dial keeps every reading clear, just as a Prospex sports watch should. LumiBrite on the hands and markers extends right to the tip of the chronograph hand, so timed runs stay visible in dim light.

Any light source keeps the solar caliber V192 charged, so there is no battery to change, and a full charge runs the watch for approximately six months. Its 60-minute chronograph measures in 1/5-second steps and adds a split time function, while a 24-hour hand, a power reserve indicator, small seconds and a date calendar fill out the dial. The 39mm stainless steel case pairs a curved sapphire crystal, anti-reflective on its inner surface, with a screwdown case back and 100 meters of water resistance, and a tapered three-link bracelet closes with a three-fold push-button clasp.

Features

  • Light green dial – a vintage sports car shade with black subdials and a sandblast finish.

  • Solar caliber V192 – charged by any light, with no battery changes and approximately 6 months per full charge.
  • Tapered three-link bracelet – stainless steel, with a three-fold push-button clasp.

Timepiece History

Seiko's story began in 1881, when a 21-year-old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. The first watch to carry the Seiko name followed in 1924, and Seiko went on to introduce a long line of watchmaking firsts, including the Quartz Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch, on December 25, 1969. In 2024, Seiko celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Seiko brand.

The SSC965 is part of the Prospex Speedtimer series, inspired by Seiko's long tradition in sports timing. In the 1960s, Seiko built high-precision stopwatches around its innovative heart-shaped cam mechanism, including a 1/100-second stopwatch that served as an official timing device at the world sporting event held in Tokyo in 1964, and in 1969 Seiko introduced the Speedtimer with Caliber 6139, the first automatic chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch. The SSC965 draws on the 1969 Speedtimer, pairing a solar chronograph with a light green dial inspired by the colors of vintage sports cars.
