Accutron Alpha 314 - 26A224

At the heart of the Alpha 314 is Accutron's hand-assembled Caliber Y230, the brand's next-generation take on the tuning fork movement. Oscillating at 360 Hz, it keeps time to within two seconds a day, sends the seconds hand on a smooth, continuous sweep, and produces the soft F-sharp hum that has long been Accutron's signature.

The open dial leaves that movement in full view beneath a domed sapphire crystal. A silver-tone chapter ring carries Super-LumiNova hour markers and a matching handset, while the caliber below shows off anglage, perlage, Côtes de Genève and frosted finishing, along with modern Silicium and Elinvar components chosen for efficiency and durability.

Everything is housed in an asymmetrical shield-shaped case that reimagines the iconic Accutron Spaceview. Crafted from 904L stainless steel for superior corrosion resistance, the case pairs polished and brushed surfaces with two distinct lug styles, and is fitted to a black padded Italian calf leather strap with a foldover deployant clasp. A watchmaking classic, brought firmly into the present.

Timepiece History

Bulova introduced the Accutron in 1960 under the slogan "The Watch That Hums." It was the first watch to replace the traditional balance wheel with a battery-powered tuning fork, driven by a system developed with Swiss engineer Max Hetzel, that vibrated 360 times per second. That precision made it the first wristwatch accurate enough for official U.S. railroad use. The open-dial Spaceview became the design most closely associated with the Accutron, and Accutron was used in 46 NASA space missions.

In the early 1960s, Accutron also offered "Alpha" models powered by the original Caliber 214 tuning fork movement, including an open-dial Spaceview Alpha with an asymmetrical case. Some Alpha cases paired differently shaped upper and lower lugs; the Alpha 314 likewise uses two styles of lugs.

By the mid-1970s, Accutron had moved away from the tuning fork. The technology returned in 2025 with the Spaceview 314, and Accutron introduced the Alpha 314 in its Fall/Winter 2026 collection as a reinvention of the Spaceview, with a heritage-inspired, shield-shaped case.
