Accutron Spaceview 314 - 27A206

If you've been waiting for a collector's piece that truly honors where Accutron began, the Accutron Spaceview 314 Limited Edition (ref. 27A206) in 18k gold is it. Limited to just 65 pieces worldwide, it's built around the hand-assembled Accutron Caliber Y230 tuning fork movement. Instead of a ticking balance wheel, a tiny tuning fork vibrates 360 times per second, sweeping the seconds hand smoothly around the dial and producing a steady F-sharp hum, with accuracy rated within two seconds a day. Modern Silicium and Elinvar components sit alongside anglage, perlage, Côtes de Genève and frosted finishing, all on full view through the open dial.

The 37mm case is crafted from polished 18k gold, with straight lugs, a crown set at 4 o'clock and a height of 13.35mm. Rather than printing the hour and minute markings on a dial, Accutron places them on the underside of the domed sapphire crystal, leaving the tuning fork movement completely unobstructed, while the iconic white alpha hands with luminous fill tell the time. A brown padded Italian calf leather strap with a solid gold classic tang buckle completes this luxury gold watch. It's splash resistant, so rain or washing your hands is no problem, but it's best to take it off before swimming or showering.

Timepiece History

Bulova introduced the Accutron in 1960 under the slogan "The Watch That Hums." It was the first watch to replace the traditional balance wheel with a battery-powered tuning fork, driven by a system developed with Swiss engineer Max Hetzel, that vibrated 360 times per second and kept time to about two seconds a day. That precision made it the first wristwatch accurate enough for official U.S. railroad use.

The Spaceview is widely said to have begun as a display model that let jewelers show customers the tuning fork movement through an open dial, with customer demand leading Bulova to sell it. Gold was part of the story from the start: in the early 1960s, Accutron offered open-dial Spaceview models such as the Spaceview Alpha in solid 14k gold cases. The Accutron's accuracy also earned it a place in the space program, where it was used in 46 NASA space missions.

By the mid-1970s, Accutron had moved away from the tuning fork. Accutron revived the Spaceview in 2020 with an electrostatic movement, then brought the tuning fork back in 2025, 65 years after the original, with the Spaceview 314, whose movement closely follows the 1960 design.
