Junghans 1972 Competition - 27/4504.00

Unapologetically bold and steeped in 1970s style, the Junghans 1972 Competition (ref. 27/4504.00) is a chronograph with real presence. Its oval case and stopwatch-style crown and pushers, positioned at the top, recall the decade when Junghans was timekeeper at numerous sporting competitions, while the dark grey sunburst dial, finished with a matt transparent lacquer, sets off matt black totalizers and a tachymeter scale.

Inside, the self-winding J880.5 caliber powers the stop function, tachymeter, small seconds and date, with up to 48 hours of power reserve. The 45.5 x 41.0mm ellipsoidal stainless steel case features a screwed crown and tube for water resistance to 10 bar, a four-screw case back and a flat, anti-reflective sapphire crystal. Luminous hands and a luminous minute track keep it legible, and a perforated black leather strap with grey lining, a stainless steel inlay and a folding clasp completes this automatic sports chronograph with unmistakable retro flair.

Timepiece History

Junghans traces its roots to 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law set up a workshop in Schramberg, in Germany's Black Forest, to make components for clocks, and the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had become the world's largest watch factory, and in 1918 Arthur Junghans completed the nine-tier Terrassenbau, a terraced factory designed to bring daylight to every workplace that now houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans still crafts its watches in Schramberg.

In 1972, Junghans was the official timekeeper of the Munich Olympic Games, supplying electronic starting and finishing systems, and throughout the 1970s it timed numerous sporting competitions. The 1972 Competition draws directly on the design language of that era, from its oval case to the pushers and crown positioned at the top like a stopwatch.
