Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope - 27/4502.02

Few chronographs are as quietly confident as the Junghans max bill Chronoscope (ref. 27/4502.02). Built around the essentials, its matt silver-plated dial shows the restraint that made Max Bill's designs famous, with luminous hands and minute track for clarity day and night and a symmetrical layout made possible by omitting the small seconds.

The self-winding J880.2 movement powers the stop function and date display and stores up to 48 hours of energy, so the watch keeps running even after a day off the wrist. Its 40mm stainless steel case, 14.4mm in height, sits beneath an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and a leather strap with a stainless steel buckle completes the design. With 5 bar water resistance, it is a Bauhaus-inspired automatic chronograph made for daily wear.

Features

  • J880.2 Automatic Caliber – Self-winding chronograph movement with up to 48 hours of reserve.
  • Stop Function & Date – Chronograph timing plus an everyday date display.
  • Balanced, Minimalist Layout – No small seconds, for striking symmetry.
  • Eco-Friendly Luminous Substance – On the minute track and hands for low-light reading.
  • Anti-Reflective Sapphire Crystal – Clear, glare-free view of the silver-plated dial.

Timepiece History

Junghans traces its roots to 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law set up a workshop in Schramberg, in Germany's Black Forest, to make components for clocks, and the first complete Junghans clocks followed in 1866. By 1903, Junghans had become the world's largest watch factory, and in 1918 Arthur Junghans completed the nine-tier Terrassenbau, a terraced factory designed to bring daylight to every workplace that now houses the Junghans Terrassenbau Museum. Owned by the Steim family since 2009, Junghans still crafts its watches in Schramberg.

Max Bill, who studied at the Bauhaus, created his first design for Junghans in the early 1950s, a kitchen clock, before turning to the company's wristwatches in 1961. He drew the squared numerals and dial typography himself, and those details still define the max bill line today. The Chronoscope shows how far that minimalism can go: by giving up the small seconds display, it achieves a perfectly balanced, symmetrical dial.
