Seiko 5 Sports - SRPK89

Sleek in black and proudly rooted in Seiko's past, the Seiko 5 Sports SNXS Series (ref. SRPK89) was developed around the idea of everyday carry, a watch you reach for each morning without a second thought. The black dial sets a crisp stage for an orange seconds hand, a sporty touch borrowed from many 1970s Seiko 5 Sports models, with a metallic minute track running around the edge. LumiBrite on the hour and minute hands and on the upper faces of the eleven bar indices keeps the time legible in dim light, and a day/date display adds everyday practicality.

The characteristic SNXS case returns in stainless steel with contrasting hairline and mirror finishes, a low center of gravity designed for a more comfortable fit and a small crown at 4 o'clock that leaves its flowing lines undisturbed. Inside, caliber 4R36 runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour with 24 jewels and about 41 hours of power reserve, it also winds by hand, and a screw-down see-through case back puts it on display. Measuring 37.4mm across and 12.5mm thick under a curved Hardlex crystal, it is water resistant to 100 meters and rides on a newly developed steel bracelet with a three-fold push-button clasp and a classic, nostalgic look.

Features

  • Black dial, orange seconds hand – a 1970s Seiko 5 Sports accent set against deep black.
  • Hairline and mirror finishes – contrasting surfaces across the 37.4mm stainless steel case.
  • Self-winding 4R36 – 21,600 vibrations per hour, about 41 hours of reserve and manual winding.
  • LumiBrite hands and indices – luminous on the hour and minute hands and the diamond-cut bar indices.
  • Three-fold push-button clasp – closing a newly developed stainless steel bracelet.

Timepiece History

Seiko's story began in 1881, when a 21-year-old entrepreneur, Kintaro Hattori, opened a shop selling and repairing watches and clocks in central Tokyo. The first watch to carry the Seiko name followed in 1924, and Seiko went on to introduce a long line of watchmaking firsts, including the Quartz Astron, the world's first quartz wristwatch, on December 25, 1969. In 2024, Seiko celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Seiko brand.

The SRPK89 belongs to Seiko 5 Sports, a collection rooted in the Seiko Sportsmatic 5 of 1963, Japan's first automatic day-date watch. Seiko 5 Sports itself was born in 1968, adding enhanced water resistance, a strengthened crystal and luminous hands and markers to the Seiko 5 essentials of an automatic movement, a day-date display, water resistance, a recessed crown and a durable case and bracelet, and it found worldwide favor as a go-anywhere watch. In 2019, Seiko 5 Sports was rebranded to carry watch culture forward to the next generation. It belongs to the SNXS series, made for everyday life in the city.
