Seiko Essentials Digital Quartz "Rotocall" - SMGG17

Bold, graphic and proudly rooted in the 1980s, the Seiko Essentials Digital Quartz "Rotocall" (ref. SMGG17) pairs a striking black and yellow octagonal bezel with a black-framed LCD display. That bezel does far more than look the part: turn it and the display steps to the next mode, the same delightfully hands-on idea that made the original a favorite. The numerals are set in the typeface of the vintage models, giving this digital quartz watch an authentic retro character from every angle.

Seiko's A824 digital quartz caliber brings a full toolkit to the wrist, with a 1/100-second chronograph, a counter, dual time, single and daily alarms, day and date displays, an AM/PM indicator and a battery life display. The 37mm stainless steel case and matching bracelet carry textured, vintage-inspired details and stay comfortably slim at 10.6mm, closing with a tri-fold push-button clasp. With 100 meters of water resistance, it is as ready for a weekend at the lake as it is for the workweek.

Features

  • Rotating mode-select bezel – the octagonal black and yellow bezel turns to switch between the watch's digital modes.
  • Original-style LCD display – set in the same typeface as the vintage models and framed in black.
  • 1/100-second chronograph – precise stopwatch timing, paired with a handy counter function.
  • Alarms and dual time – single and daily alarms, a second time display, AM/PM indication and a battery life readout.
  • 100m water resistance – a 10 bar stainless steel case and bracelet secured by a tri-fold push-button clasp.

Timepiece History

Seiko's story began in 1881, when founder Kintaro Hattori opened a shop in Tokyo's Ginza district to sell and repair timepieces. In the decades since, Seiko has evolved together with Tokyo, and its watches continue to draw on the culture and design sensibility the city has nurtured for generations. Guided by its founding philosophy of staying "Always one step ahead of the rest," Seiko marks its 145th anniversary in 2026.

The SMGG17 traces its roots to a Seiko digital watch introduced in 1982 that enthusiasts nicknamed the "Rotocall." Its octagonal rotary switch changed the way wearers moved between functions such as the alarm, timer and stopwatch, letting them change modes with a simple turn of the bezel. That inventive design, together with its popularity among astronauts in the 1980s, when the octagonal design was used on several space missions, earned the Rotocall wide recognition around the world. Seiko has now recreated the design for today, keeping the octagonal case, the rotating bezel and the typeface of the original display while upgrading its performance.
