Accutron Spaceview 314 - 26A223

If you love the story behind a watch as much as the watch itself, the Accutron Spaceview 314 (ref. 26A223) in Grade 5 titanium is hard to beat. This open-dial tuning fork watch brings back the technology that made Accutron famous in the 1960s through the hand-assembled Accutron Caliber Y230 tuning fork movement. Instead of the ticking balance wheel of a mechanical watch, a tiny tuning fork vibrates 360 times per second, giving the seconds hand a perfectly smooth sweep and producing Accutron's signature soft F-sharp hum. It's accurate to within two seconds a day, and modern Silicium and Elinvar components help the movement run efficiently and hold up over the years.

Crafted in lightweight Grade 5 titanium, this luxury titanium watch pairs a 39mm bi-finished case, with straight lugs and a crown tucked at 4 o'clock, with a vintage-inspired titanium coffin-link bracelet in brushed and polished finishes. A domed sapphire crystal opens up a clear view of the movement, where anglage, perlage, Côtes de Genève and frosted finishes are on full display beneath a champagne chapter ring with Super-LumiNova hour markers and a matching handset. At 13.25mm thick, this Spaceview has real presence on the wrist, and it's splash resistant, so rain or washing your hands is no problem, but it's best to take it off before swimming or showering.

Timepiece History

Bulova introduced the Accutron in 1960 under the slogan "The Watch That Hums." It was the first watch to replace the traditional balance wheel with a battery-powered tuning fork, driven by a system developed with Swiss engineer Max Hetzel, that vibrated 360 times per second and kept time to about two seconds a day. That precision made it the first wristwatch accurate enough for official U.S. railroad use.

The Spaceview is widely said to have begun as a display model that let jewelers show customers the tuning fork movement through an open dial, with customer demand leading Bulova to sell it. The Accutron's accuracy also earned it a place in the space program: Accutron was used in 46 NASA space missions, Accutron clocks were built into Gemini capsule instrument panels, and Accutron timers helped control experiments that astronauts left on the moon.

By the mid-1970s, Accutron had moved away from the tuning fork. Accutron revived the Spaceview in 2020 with an electrostatic movement, then brought the tuning fork back in 2025 with the Spaceview 314, whose movement closely follows the 1960 original.
