Alpina Alpiner Extreme Skeleton Automatic - AL-520GSKT3AE6B

The Alpina Alpiner Extreme Skeleton Automatic (ref. AL-520GSKT3AE6B) proudly puts Swiss watchmaking on full display, revealing everything that makes it tick. This dial-less design reveals the Swiss-made AL-520 skeletonized automatic movement, set within a matte grey outer ring with white markers and applied pearl-black indexes filled with white luminous material. Hand-polished pearl-black hour and minute hands, also lume-filled, keep the time readable over the open movement, and a seconds hand tipped with Alpina's red triangle adds a signature flash of color.

The 39 x 40.5mm case is brushed and polished stainless steel, matched to a stainless steel bracelet with a push-button folding buckle, and an anti-reflective sapphire crystal keeps the view of the movement clear. With 200 meters of water resistance, this skeleton automatic watch is as ready for swimming and snorkeling as it is for showing off.

Timepiece History

Alpina's story began in 1883, when alpinist Gottlieb Hauser founded a watchmaking cooperative in Winterthur, Switzerland, with fellow mountaineers, aiming to build robust watches for harsh mountain terrain. In 1938, Alpina introduced the Alpina 4, marketed on four qualities: waterproof, shockproof, anti-magnetic and rustproof. After a period of near inactivity from the early 1980s, Alpina was revived in the early 2000s by Aletta and Peter Stas, the founders of Frederique Constant, and it joined the Citizen Group in 2016.

The original Alpina Extreme Automatic of 2005 introduced a cushion-shaped steel case and a bezel with triangular screws, a nod to Alpina's red triangle logo, itself derived from a stylized Matterhorn. In 2022, Alpina relaunched the Alpiner Extreme Automatic, a model it describes as a return to its mechanical heritage and outdoor identity.

At Geneva Watch Days in 2024, Alpina unveiled the Alpiner Extreme Skeleton, a dial-less version of the Alpiner Extreme that puts its skeletonized AL-520 automatic movement on full display.
